A Zero Waste Valentines Day

Brett and I volunteering at a wildlife refuge in Bolivia

I love my husband. He is sweet, kind, thoughtful, attentive, and very good looking. Over the five years we have been together he has become an excellent gift giver. He has bought and made me items that I love. He is pretty much the best.

Now that we are transitioning to a zero waste lifestyle, I can already see that the holidays will look different for us as a couple. This valentines day will be the first holiday I experience while trying to be waste free. I’ve given it some thought and this is how I am going to approach it-

  1. Swapping out products and gifts for experiences. This year, instead of getting him a physical present, I am going to take my baby out on the town! Dinner and a movie, or dinner and an activity (he loves bowling) will be the perfect thing. We can spend a lovely evening together having fun and being ourselves while creating no waste for our planet. Hooray, everyone wins!
  2.  Purchasing waste free edible goodies instead of wrapped candies. The bulk section at most grocery stores has a plethora of yummy treats; everything from chocolate covered pretzels to gummy candy. Or check the bakery counter for freshly baked goodies without the packaging. Whole Foods has a great self-serve cookie case near the checkout line (perfect for impulse buying). I recommend putting your goodies in a glass jar and decorating with a piece of twine. You will have a a lovely little gift for your sweetie.

Happy valentines day!
